HSE Business Partner
I’ve been in the industry for 20 years and originally started with Agility as an apprentice working on the electricity network, which I did for nine years. I had a lot of passion for the work I did but left for different opportunities. I was sad to leave but needed to grow outside of the business.
As part of my career journey I owned and operated my own cable jointing line work business for seven years and it was towards the end of this chapter that Zinfra approached me with a new opportunity. I took on the role of HSE Business Partner for Zinfra - funny enough the manager hiring me was very excited (and so was I ) as I used to contract with them in my own business.
In HSE you’re only as good as your last job. I’ve only been in the role since June this year – so I’m very new, but I think I’m making the right impression. My role is important because we have the ability to lean in on all parts of the business, offer assistance to help the group improve for the better. My team take a holistic approach to improve processes in order to make life easier, more productive and help everyone have a better day, most importantly go home safely.
I’m currently working on a highly complex client contract and I’m really proud of the fact that we have improved the overall relationship by focusing on key areas to adjust. There’s been a real shift and step forward on both sides. By reviewing the history, adjusting the focus, and all stakeholders getting on the same page, we’ve developed a stronger game plan to meet the needs of the client.
Working at Zinfra
We have a tough job in HSE. We stay because we feel we’re valued by the business and people here at Zinfra actually care about each other.
It’s essentially all about the team. We pull together, stay in touch daily and fight the good fight, and we have support from around the business. If something out of the ordinary happens we come together to share a wealth of knowledge and support each other, which I really value.
I love working with the field teams. I have respect for them and I appreciate what they do as I started my career as an apprentice in the field. They know they’re speaking with someone who has been there, done that, and understands their world.
Most importantly, the business has been supportive with flexibility and putting family first. I have had a sick child and the health of my gorgeous daughter comes first. The environment here and my colleagues are completely supportive of that.
Diversity and inclusion
I have seen change over my time in the industry and I feel we’re moving in the right direction.
I’m a fairly strong character, not much gets to me. I’ve experienced abuse on site as a female apprentice many years ago. I was not backwards in coming forwards – most of the time I let my work speak for itself, but I always spoke up when I felt the need.
Moving into the corporate side of things, I’ve had an incredible amount of support. I’m out and proud, and I make people feel comfortable to ask questions. Everyone is supportive.
We’ve got people from all different backgrounds and orientations working at Zinfra. Belonging at work is important and our team are good at checking in with each other. I believe difference doesn’t matter, if anything, difference makes us better. We’re all here for a reason. To learn from each other, be kind and to be better humans.
In our industry, there are plenty of opportunities to develop and broaden your horizons. The people are friendly and down to earth and travel opportunities are plentiful. The long-term opportunities for true career diversity are there also.
I would love to encourage more women to join the industry. When I see another tradeswoman in our industry, I get excited! However, man or woman, it’s not for everyone. We work at heights, it can be dangerous, and not everyone can handle it.
