Zinfra Reverses Northern Gas Pipeline

A major infrastructure upgrade has been delivered in just eight months, with leading engineering solutions company, Zinfra, completing works to make Jemena’s 622 km Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP) bidirectional.
Commissioned in late 2019, the NGP has traditionally delivered gas from Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory, east to Mount Isa in Queensland. Zinfra’s work means that the pipeline is now able to transport gas in both directions, in response to changing gas market conditions and needs.
Speaking about the project, Justin Anderson, Zinfra’s Operations Manager for Gas Projects said similar projects can take up to 18 months to complete.
“This project highlights Zinfra’s ability to deliver safely and successfully in challenging and remote environments. The team of around 100 on ground workers collaborated to respond to the request to fast-track the project and deliver it in record time,” said Mr Anderson.
“By repurposing existing assets, the team designed, constructed and installed the necessary infrastructure to make the Northern Gas Pipeline capable of flowing in either direction.
“The key to our successful delivery was our collaborative engagement with regulatory bodies, clients and project partners, enabling us to secure timely approvals and maintain alignment with project milestones.”
Mr Anderson said a bidirectional NGP is capable of delivering up to 60TJs of gas per day into the Northern Territory from Queensland and 90TJ/ds of gas into Queensland.
“We know gas has an important role to play in firming intermittent renewable generation, and are pleased to be able to deliver this capability to the Northern Territory via the bidirectional NGP.”
Zinfra’s Managing Director, Peter Iancov, said the NGP reversal project showcases the company’s ability to engineer solutions for its clients that will support their strategic ambitions.
“We are playing a leading role in supporting power generation by creating an efficient way to share gas across large communities,” Mr Iancov said.
“We were pleased to deliver this project on behalf of Jemena and the Northern Territory Government to support the delivery of energy to the Territory.”
